What do candidates look for in career sites?
We’ve spoken before about what you should be doing as a company to attract the best candidates. But have you ever wondered what exactly it is that job seekers look for on career sites? What is it that makes them decide whether to push that “Apply Now” button or not. Here, you’ll find a list of what candidates feel to be the most important attributes when it comes to looking for jobs. These are potentially the deciding factors between a candidate deciding to work for your company or not.
This makes sense right? Of course, companies are going to sell themselves in the best way possible on social media and, most of the time, it’s probably quite an accurate reflection. But hearing what employees’ thoughts are of a company is invaluable to your potential candidates. Employee testimonials offer an insight into culture, development opportunities and could even sway a candidates decision into accepting or declining an offer.
According to Glassdoor, 48% of candidates stated that benefits are the most important factor when looking for a job. This is for a similar reason as the employee testimonials, in that they showcase why the company is so great to work for. Even if the benefits aren’t monetary, it adds to your company and its culture and shows candidates your company is passionate about improving the working life of its employees.
We live in a world where we’re constantly glued to our phones, so it’s no surprise that one third of job seekers have admitted to applying for jobs using mobile devices. Whether on a long commute or a lunch-break, or even just sitting in front of the tv, people rely on their phones more than ever to get the information they need. With that in mind, you need to consider making the candidate journey as easy as possible. Do you have a user-friendly mobile version of your career site? Is it one click application? If your potential candidates are able to apply for your jobs anywhere, at any time, then you’re able to attract the best talent and, more importantly, they have a much more enjoyable candidate experience overall.
A Mission Statement
50% of candidates look at a company’s mission statement. A short paragraph at the top of your career site, telling candidates what your company is all about and what you strive for is essential. This is your chance to tell candidates why they should apply for your company and is one of the best ways of attracting like-minded individuals.
Company Culture and Values
Company culture has become one of the most important factors in seeking employment. This ties in nicely with company values as they both give an indication of what the working environment is going to be like in your company. Social media is one of the most popular ways to showcase company culture. But adding some images and videos to your career site which give candidates an idea of what it’s like to work for your company can really elevate it. It also means that candidates don’t have to stray too far from the page itself.
How many of these does your career site have?
Taking all this into account highlights how important the candidate experience is. Gone are the days when you can just post a simple job ad and that’s that — career sites are key. Understanding your candidates’ needs and what they look for in a company can lead to easier hires and better talent.
